Voter FAQs

Whew what a week!

Today on the Harrison County -KY Republican Party Facebook Page, an announcement was made that another applicant filed paperwork to seek election for County Judge Executive.  Check out both announcements on our social media platform HERE and HERE.

This means that HARRISON COUNTY IS HAVING A REPUBLICAN PRIMARY ELECTION!!!  This is a big deal for every registered Republican Harrison County voter.  Since this is now a reality, this blog is to address some common questions that we have been asked recently. Please share this with anyone interested.

First of all, you can make sure you are registered to vote, review how you are registered, and/or change your voter registration to the party you align with. Govoteky.com

🔸️Every registered Republican and Democrat voter in Harrison County will have the privilege to vote in the primary election.

🔸️Voters registered as Independent voters do not get to vote in the primary election for either Republicans or Democrat candidates.

🔸️Individuals who are not registered to vote may not participate in elections.

🔸️A voter ONLY gets to vote in the primary election in May for the party for which they are registered to vote.  The voter is helping select a candidate of their chosen party to move forward to the general election in November.

🔸️ While only voters who live in the city of Cynthiana get to vote for Mayor and Commissioners in the local elections, those elections are non-partisan. That means regardless of the party a voter is registered to vote for, any voter who lives in city limits will have the opportunity to cast a ballot for those positions.

🔸️EVERY registered voter in Harrison County will get to vote for County Judge Executive.  Every voter will choose a Magistrate for their district. In the primary election, voters will only be able to select a candidate of the party the voter is registered to vote for. Govoteky.com to check your voter registration

🔸️If there is more than one candidate who chooses to seek election, registered for the same party, in the same district, there will be a primary election for that position.  VOTERS MUST BE REGISTERED TO VOTE FOR THE PARTY THEY WISH TO SUPPORT BY DECEMBER 31, 2021 to be eligible to vote in the primary election, for that party.

🔸️An example is the two Republican County Judge Executive candidates. EVERY voter who is registered (by the deadline) as a Republican voter in Harrison County will have the opportunity to vote in the primary election May 17th, 2022 to choose one candidate to participate in the general election against the candidates of other parties in November.

🔸️Another example would be if there are two Republican Congressional candidates for either the 4th or 6th district, every registered Republican in Harrison County would get to vote for the candidate they hope to see move on to the general election in November. (Currently our county is represented by Thomas Massie and Andy Barr.  This may change after redistricting is complete).

🔸️Magistrates are elected by the district they will serve.  There are 8 districts in Harrison County.  If there are 2 candidates, registered as the same party, seeking election in the same district, there will be a primary election in that district.

🔸️It may be that not every candidate seeking election in your district will have a primary opponent, we urge voters to go vote anyway

🔸️Perhaps an office up for election will not have a candidate from the party a voter decided to align with and registered to vote for.  We urge voters to go vote anyway.

Hope this helps to clear up some confusion and answer some questions! Please comment below or use the contact form to ask any questions you may have. It has been our pleasure to address concerns and bust the myth that one must be registered a certain way to be able to vote in the primary election. It just isn’t true anymore.
